This is a great movie, full of twists and turns, a bit disturbing yet at the same time thought-provoking. The thing is, in real life there is no man like Batman, but there is Jesus. He came to save us and He is the only one who can.
I know I usually have a picture of the title of the movie sent from my cell phone from within a dark movie theater, but this movie didn't have a title at the beginning! I almost ran my cell phone battery down waiting and realized it just wasn't coming up. So a picture of the tickets will have to do.
This movie is good...REAL good. It's like nothing I've seen since...well...the first one! They really stepped it up. Go see it and come back here. I hope to start writing my thoughts tonight and have them on HollywoodJesus by next weekend.

I’m sad to see that Susan and Peter will no longer be able to come back to Narnia. I’m not sure what lessons Susan takes with her, but Peter’s journey is one that mirrors a certain proverb. I don’t think many of our our own journeys are too far off.

Ok back to the movie, full review on HJ to come, but the short version: they should stick to biblical, or in the case of the Grail somewhat biblical, themes. It was better than the second one, but definitely not on par with numbers 1 & 3.

One of the things that has always been unsettling to me is the movie critic, well not just the movie critic most critics really, but let's stick with the movie critic. Here's a dude that makes a living hacking on some other dudes work. The critic has most likely never made a movie of his own, in fact he probably tried, but found out he had no talent. But what he did have was a sharp tongue...or pen...uh keyboard?
Anyways, that's why I try to do movie reviews mainly from a spiritual perspective. Sometimes the devil on the other side of the shoulder gets me, but for the most part I want to see something Biblical...something God may want to say from a movie rather than hack some dudes life's work! Because hey Directors, Writers, Actors, etc have feelings too.
Having someone critique you, watch every move you make, and judge your heart is like making a cool snow man and having a dog p!$ on it (see picture above).
Whenever I think I have someone nailed I try to think of this verse, But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Sam 16:7)
Even Samuel judged wrongly, by appearance...only God knows the heart. It's best to ask humble questions, than boastful accusations. That way we can understand the heart...and maybe, just maybe connect with the other person at a deeper level, than just random outward judgments.
I leave you with one of my favorite quotes, from Theodore Roosevelt. Hope this blog makes sense...if not I'm sure some critic will point it out.
All three discs have the theatrical version of the movies intact and unaltered, which is great. Some things ought to be left well enough alone. Plus, there are the teasers for the fourth film. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for May 22nd to come around!
I went over to a friends for a Mother's Day BBQ. I thought it was awesome that he stuck all the chicken in this bundt pan!
This movie reminds me of the saying, “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” This movie also reminds me of the pre-flight warning: “If you are sitting next to someone that needs assistance with their oxygen mask, please make sure yours is secure first.”
This movie proves a couple of things for me: first, figure skaters can’t act (Sasha Cohen is in this one); second, Kids love the darndest movies (mine won’t stop watching it). Rent/Queue it (even if it’s for the kids).
So I had a Pedro moment (from Napoleon Dynamite) and got real hot, so I decided to shave off most of my hair. This is #8 on the top and #7 on the sides. What do you think? I was inspired by the new Asian dude on Lost Ken Leung aka Miles Straume.

This is my friend Joe. You can't see it real well, but he's holding a brown belt. At our Aikido dojo that's the level right before black belt. He was just promoted tonight.
Here's what I know about Joe. He's in his 60's, a war veteran, tough as nails ex-bar bouncer, he could probably kill you with his bare hands, and he's one of the kindest people I know. He decided a few years back to take Aikido because he didn't like the person he had become. The martial art is all about the art of self-defense through loving non-violent, non-resistent methods (aka no kicking, punching, jabbing fingers in your eyeballs kinda thing)
FYI this Dojo is run by a Christian Couple who daily share the Gospel with their students, through their lives, actions, as well as their words. Some have come to saving faith, but everyone IS loved!I've been working at Full Circle Aikido for almost a year and a half and Joe has been there almost every time I have. I look forward to working with him, mainly because he's a real genuine tough guy and they are hard to find...even harder to hang out with.
So congratulations Joe! You deserve it.

First one was today 4/14. Had a pretty rough week last week so I took a maintenance day (that's adult speak for playing hookie from school - at my work we get 2 weeks worth!)
I walked to my old stomping grounds the Oceano Dunes Recreation Area. I know you couldn't tell just by looking at me but I used to be an ATV riding, mullet flying out of my helmet, I love the smell of two stroke gasoline in the morning kinda guy. It's been a long time since I jumped my friend's dad's sand rail out in the California desert, but I still remember I felt like Luke Duke jumping the General Lee!
This is a picture of dinner at my neighbor's (Phil & Megan). They cooked us BBQ'd Tri-Tip (notice the perfect red areas?), a wonderful root vegetable medley with delicately cooked mushrooms, oh and green beans served the only way I like veggies...w/ bacon!
I smothered my whole dish with the juices on the cutting board from the meat, is that bad?
Phil was good enough to brew me a decaf espresso to go with my deelish strawberry shortcake that my equally deelish bride put together.

Hope you like the pics. When I used to come up here to Oceano Dunes I was not a Christian, but I remember something in my heart being moved by the beauty and vibrancy of that area. The colors always seemed crisper there, the air so clear, and the sky a blue I had never seen. It may have had to do with the fact that I lived in a suburb of a suburb of LA. The colors there can always be described in shades of brown with a touch of smog.
When I went back there today I saw it again...the beauty and the vibrancy. And my heart was moved to worship, the God who had created all of it. I wonder about all the people who were there, camping and riding mechanized vehicles of all sorts, if they too were moved, without knowing why...I hope they will some day!
When we went to Phil and Megan's house, Phil kept saying, "Man I can't believe it took us 6 years to get together for dinner." Isn't that weird? Six years of going to the same church AND being neighbors and never getting together to share a meal. It's a sad comment on our busyness and how we take for granted that we can always do it another time.
Here's to having them over next! (Before another 6 years goes by!)

The tension between Dave Seville and Ian Hawke made it interesting to me. Bottom line we have to ask ourselves: who has our best interests at heart, God (Dave) or Satan (Ian)? I hope you come up with the same conclusion as these animated chipmunks!
Eight years ago Saturday, my wife was very pregnant with our 1st son Josh. She decided to go feed the ducks down in Oceano at the Pier St. pond. She had Josh the very next day and she has made tradition of feeding the ducks with Josh, Grandma, and later Jason the day before Josh's birthday.
This year Duck Day ended up being on a Saturday so I was able to go. There weren't very many ducks, but there sure were a lot of Seagulls (aka rats with wings). So we decided to feed them. They decided to...well bomb me with poo.
The above picture is the first attack. I then put my hood on, because there were seagulls everywhere in the air. The picture below is the second bombing. I was holding the Trader Joe's bag in front of my pants and I got this gift.
It was a great time, I was so glad to be able to go with the family. I have to laugh that these seagulls had such a field day pooing on me when all i was trying to do was feed them. It got me thinking about what I do to God. He provides everything I need, not want, but need and I poo on him by complaining or not being thankful.
Lord help me not to be a seagull!

This is my sword. My beautiful bride Linda gave it to me for our 10th Anniversary. It's a constant reminder to war for God's Kingdom, my home and family, as well as Jesus' bride the church.
If you recognize the sword that is because it is an exact replica of Anduril, the sword wielded by Aragorn in the movie version of The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. As a side note we did not tell each other what we were getting, but I bought Linda an exact replica of the pendant Arwen wore in the movies. She is my Evenstar.
Ok...to the reason of this post. When we have guests over to our house for the first time I usually show them the sword, especially if there are men in the group. I'm always amazed at the reaction of the men, or boys.
We could be having a fine conversation very civil, lots of fun and all that, throughout the whole time, but when I break out the sword a transformation comes over them. All of a sudden they are alive, animated and well...engaged. The women for the most part are interested, but the reaction of the males in the room is very evident, they are into the sword.
This always gets me thinking:
Walk the Line is very much about Jesus. And what is amazing is I can’t recall his name mentioned once, but it is still about him. Specifically it is about how Jesus came after sinner extraordinaire Johnny Cash through June Carter and her family.
Will Stanton is called into a fantastic adventure, but it’s hard… real hard. See, Will is the chosen one, a seventh son of a seventh son, who must seek out 6 signs that will turn away an evil being bent on destroying the earth. In doing so he can save the world.
My 7-year-old son said, “This movie amazes me half to death.” So apparently there is something about it that interested him as well, thus the recommendation I have for it. Some of it haunts me and I don’t know why yet, even after watching it a few times.

When I used to make fun of “the church of the holy touchdown,” I was religious enough, trying to conform to some rules and regulations, going to an all-boys religiously-affiliated private school. But back then there was a time for “spirituality” and a time for, well, other things.
I get so many screeners now I can't do a full review on all of them. These are some quick announcements that I started doing. Enjoy!
The only things that kept noodling at me to watch this movie were: a) there’s a brief hockey scene, and b) Kevin Bacon and Kelly Preston are in it and they usually have good judgments as far as movie roles. I should have passed.
The movie is basically a very long Hallmark commercial; you know the ones with the poignant stories and music that can get you crying in less than 30 seconds? The acting, directing, and music make for a great combination worth at least a rental.
I didn’t really get this movie. After watching it, I couldn’t sing, “I’ve got Sunshine… on a cloudy day.” If a movie doesn’t make me sing, that’s a bad sign. Maybe it will make you sing, though; let me know.
We get a fair amount of press releases and screeners here at HJ, so I’m writing this column to let you know what is Queue, Rent, or Buy worthy and when it’s going to release. This one is absolutely packed with special features on top of the shorts.
We all have things that we have inherited from the generations before us. Ben has his personality traits and I have my defined calves. Some of the things we inherit can be gifts, some of them are burdens, a lot of them are a weird combination of both.

At times in my life I’ve found myself in Troy’s shoes (not the singing and dancing part; I only do that at home). I constantly fight double-mindedness, making promises I can’t keep. I hate that about myself, and it doesn’t work and it hurts the ones I love.
Honestly, I still don’t get it. I popped the screener for The Simpsons Movie in the old DVD player and just felt like I wanted to get those precious minutes of my life back. Actually, there was one scene that stuck with me and won’t let go.
I want to be so sold out for Jesus that I wouldn’t care what people think of me. A faith so strong that people see it and are drawn to it. I don’t want to look crazy like a Benjamin Gates… but part of me does, because Jesus is that awesome!
I wrote a review for Stardust which I saw a few weeks ago at the Drive-In. Apparently it was coming out in DVD today so the editor posted it today.
Most fairy tales have a great message, something that speaks to the heart and tells us about life. This fairy tale is no different; it speaks of growing up and putting away childish things: through a fairy tale, no less, which makes it even better!

I took two 2-week trips with my white classmates to Chile and Brazil then Japan and Thailand. They only had to feel that discomfort for 4 weeks, but they got a great taste of it! I believe all of us feel something very similar.
The list of heroes goes on, from veterans to the stay-at-home mom, or the young pastor that grew a church from a living room Bible Study. These are the people that don’t get enough credit or attention. Yet they go on, being “that guy,” as McClane calls it.
I love this story because of true love, because of God’s unfailing love for me. God knows I’ve doubted it and been unlovable, but no matter what his love never fails me. This story reminds me of that and that’s why it is one of my all time favorite movies.
I once heard that after a dog has puppies it will sometimes eat one or two of them. I know, gross, huh? But it makes me think of Christians. We often like to devour our own. This documentary, Rebellion of Thought, is not much different.

My wife found a SWEET deal for a hotel room (by which I mean suite) that includes 2 tickets to Monterey Bay Aquarium. She and my eldest son are calling the mini-vaca See the Fish, Be the Fish as the hotel we are going to has a sweet indoor pool.
I'm excited since we didn't get to do the big vaca thing this summer we really need to get away as a family. I have a special place in my heart for Monterey Bay and Pacific Grove as Linda and I spent a few days there during our honeymoon. I see this trip as a definite gift from my heavenly Father. Thank you Lord!

I have a confession: I like Tom Cruise movies. Yes, he seems to play the same character in most of his movies. He is usually the jerk that learns a lesson, turns his life around, and treats those he loves way better.
I'm a sucker for those kinds of movies, which is exactly why I'm going to try to go see The Ultimate Gift. I say try because it has a limited release and my guess is it won't get to my neck of the woods in Central California.
But the trailers have very much interested me in the theme of a spoiled boy in a man's body who learns there is more to life than just living for himself. It looks like his grandfather posthumously initiates him into manhood with some hoops to jump through. These hoops teach him hard work and selfless giving.
In my limited experience, I realize that we as a culture here in the United States worship youth, which has spawned a generation of children in adult bodies. One author used the term suspended adolescence to describe a generation of people, especially men, who do not want to grow up... take responsibility, or have a sense of duty.
I look forward to watching The Ultimate Gift, if available within twenty miles of me. I hope it will be a masterpiece of Tom Cruisian proportions.

I went to see
Although the movie does have some of those elements they weren’t the main thing I got out of it. What MovedMe most of all was how words can affect so many.
At the beginning of the movie we see an ordinary place with ordinary people all doing ordinary things. Not one thing about the place was extraordinary. By the end of the movie everything has changed, the people and place or no longer ordinary they are friendlier to each other and more considerate. If you live long enough on this earth you know that is not ordinary!
You know how it all happened? Words. First, the words “I will not let you kill him” said about the runt, that led to life. Then words were spoken to a shunned spider that led to friendship. That friendship spread to others starting with those in the barn then throughout the town that led to friendlier and more considerate…words. Oh let’s not forget the positive words woven into a web…about a pig.
It really is amazing what words can do. They are more powerful than we think. Scripture says our tongues (metaphor for our words) are like a flame that starts a fire that cannot be put out or like the rudder of a ship though small can steer a great vessel. The world was created by the words, “Let there be…” Jesus was also called the Word (John 1).
History shows that speeches, the spoken word, can change the world ever heard of “I have a dream” or “Ask not what your country can do for you…” or “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall”? Speeches can motivate positively, like the ones above, or negatively, think Hitler or Stalin.
In my own life I’ve seen the power of words. Have you ever been around someone that constantly makes negative comments? I always end up feeling so defiled…I wonder what it does to that person. I know my words affect my wife and sons for sure. A negative word and I can see chins and shoulders droop, and the opposite if I give a positive word.
After watching this movie I’m reminded and challenged that some day there will be a reckoning for the words I’ve said. They are so powerful having the ability to give life or death.
I'm going to be like Charlotte and choose my words wisely.

I was out with a friend and he said when was the last time you did a review? It's been awhile that's for sure. Nothing has really MovedMe enough to actually write one...until now.
I've recently become addicted to Lost. It all started so innocently with a trip to the Toyota dealer to get our first oil change on the Sienna. I was reading a Newsweek article on Season 3 coming up and bam...one trip to Hollywood Video and I'm hooked. It took us the better part of that week to finish Season 1 DVDs.
As I'm waiting for the Season 2 DVDs to come out in October I'll be counting it down with reviews on Hollywood Jesus.com. Some of the other writers may be doing them too so come and join us. Here are the details:

What dreams and visions has God given me? Which ones am I heeding and which ones won't I even listen to? This Patrick...that lived 300 or 400 years after the Apostle Paul saw a vision of a people transformed by the living God. In fact, he seemed to care deeply for, at the time, a people thought lower than human because they were not Roman. Amazing! This is proof that the book of Acts certainly continues to be written...from Patrick's time to ours!

"I want to celebrate Hanukkah this year." Such a simple request from my oldest son Joshua, yet so complicated for us as adults isn't it? Is it Biblical? Is it ok for a Christian to celebrate? Especially a gentile?
After some consideration it boils down to what's good for God's chosen race is good for us that have been grafted in. So I went on a journey to buy all the stuff concerning celebrating the holiday this week. We got this Menorah from Pottery Barn of all places and it's perfect because it's iron made to look like branches...get it grafted in, branches, way cool. I bought a couple of childrens books from Barnes and Noble and candles from Vons and we are good to go.
What's even cooler is that Linda found this website with some great insights into the reason for this holiday. http://www.letusreason.org/doct4.htm It spoke to me (MovedMe) because it says that Hanukkah is the Feast of Dedications...which is something I need way more of. Rededicating my life to God and reminding myself not to be dedicated to idols or my sins...just as the Maccabees were dedicated to God in not bowing to King Antiochus and later were able to rededicate the temple (which is now us...we are the temple of God.)
There is so much more there on the site...I believe God wants to speak to me and MoveMe to worship Him. I'm gonna go read the rest of it. In the mean time let's dedicate 2006 to God, get rid of our idols, and repent of our sins! Amen?
